Greenwashing

Perfume is a story in odour, sometimes poetry in memory. Fragrances play a vital role in the world of beauty products, enhancing our sensory experience and leaving a lasting impression. They have the power to evoke emotions, uplift our spirits, and even transport us to different places and times. Fragrances have been utilised in beauty products for centuries, offering an added layer of luxury and sensory appeal. From perfumes and body lotions to shampoos and skincare, fragrances have the ability to transform a simple beauty routine into a sensorial experience. The scents we encounter can have a profound impact on our mood, self-confidence, and overall well being. However, it is crucial to understand the ingredients that make up these fragrances to ensure they are safe for use.

When the Colors Conceal the Truth

The tactics of greenwashing are diverse and can be hard to spot. Sometimes, companies use vague or ambiguous terms like "natural" or "organic" without providing any evidence to back up their claims. They may use images of forests, oceans, and other natural landscapes to evoke feelings of environmental responsibility, as well as green color scheme and recycled symbols. Happy animals or children running through the fields of dandelions also give the impression of eco-friendliness. Unfortunately, some companies may even use dishonest tactics, such as falsely stating that their products have been certified by reputable third-party organizations like EcoCert or USDA Organic.

What can we do to avoid falling for greenwashing?

One option is to look for products that have been certified by reputable third-party organizations, such as Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) or ISO 14001. Many of these certification services are available in Qatar and ensure that the products have met strict standards for sustainability and transparency. Another option is for us, as consumers,  to do some research on the company and their environmental track record.

In reality, greenwashing is not a harmless marketing trick as it can mislead consumers into buying products that are not as eco-friendly as they appear. This  does not only go against people’s values but also contributes to the overconsumption of natural resources and the pollution of the environment. In addition, it creates a false sense of security that the companies are doing their part to protect the planet, when in reality they may be doing the opposite.  Finally, it may damage the reputation of truly sustainable products and practices, making it harder for consumers to trust the claims of any company.

Have they been involved in any green initiatives or partnerships?

Although greenwashing is a form of deception that is becoming all too common in our consumer culture, it is up to us as consumers to educate ourselves and make informed choices about the products we buy. Yet sustainable living does not only require being watchful and demanding transparency and accountability from companies, but a daily conscious choice to support truly eco-friendly practices. Collective mindset of devotion to protecting our planet is what drives the change. Despite being a small nation, Qatar has implemented a comprehensive waste management system that includes collecting, transporting, and disposing of waste in an environmentally friendly way. With just a bit of awareness around the communities, recycling can be made easy for any resident. The recent ban of single-use plastic is one more step in the right direction.

While the green movement is gaining momentum around the world, it is still limited in many countries, including Qatar. Nevertheless, it is heartening to see that many people are taking eco-friendly measures in their daily lives. Truth be told, there is still much room for improvement, and if given the opportunity, resources, and easy access to the green products and services, people might be more motivated to take significant steps towards sustainability. The change always starts with us, so breathe in and take a moment to consider:

• How do you feel about recycling and the green movement, especially given its limitations in Qatar?
• What are some of the challenges you face when trying to implement sustainable practices?
• How have you overcome these challenges, if at all?
• Are there any particular sustainable practices that you find easy to implement in your daily life?
• How do you think we can encourage more people to adopt eco-friendly measures in countries with limited green laws?
• What eco-friendly measures would you like to take if you had the opportunity and resources to do so?

As humans, we are not above the nature but a part of it, although some may forget how to be polite guests and walk the Earth gently, the way other creatures do. A commitment to prioritize sustainability in our daily lives is a small but truly necessary change. Remember, it only takes one person to start a movement towards safe and green future.
